Transposition results
Color key: transposed chord lines; lines that look like chords but contain something unrecognized, and were not transposed.
How to get the best results
- Chords must be on separate lines from lyrics. Lines that mix chords and lyrics are left as they are.
- Separate each chord from the next with at least one space. Bar lines (
|) and dashes between chords are fine. - Write sharps like
A#and flats likeAb. Chord letters must be uppercase. - Recognized chord types include
m, min, 7, m7, maj7, 9, 11, 13, sus, sus2, sus4, 7sus4, add2, add9, dim, dim7, aug, 6, m6, 6/9, m7b5and similar. - Write bass notes like this:
Abmin/E(A flat minor with an E in the bass). - Lines of chords shouldn't contain words like “(to Bridge)” or “x2”. If a line is shown in red, check it for stray characters.
Choosing keys
- You can select your own starting key, or let the tool guess it. The guess is the most common chord in the song; if there's a tie, the chord that appears first wins.
- You can choose either a new key, or a number of half steps. When you choose half steps, the starting key is only used to name the new key.
- If the song is in a minor key, such as Am, select A as the starting key. You cannot transpose from a major to a minor key or vice versa.
- Sharps or flats follow the new key: choosing Bb gives flats, choosing A# gives sharps. Otherwise the tool uses flats for the keys usually written with flats (F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db) and sharps for the rest.
Fonts and spacing
The text area uses a fixed-width font like Courier, so chords line up with lyrics by character. If you paste in a song from a proportional font (like Times or Arial), the chords may appear shifted. Transposition will still work, and they'll line up again when you paste the result back into a document using the original font. Tabs are converted to spaces.
